Colorful streets, a giant rock and one of the most unforgettable views in Colombia.
Airport transfers, Where to stay
Published Oct 27, 2026
Medellín is a city surrounded by green mountains, with lively neighborhoods, restaurants and plenty to explore.
But before booking your hotel, it’s worth understanding two things: the international airport is outside the city, and the neighborhood you choose can make a big difference to how easily you get around.
Most international travelers arrive at José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) in Rionegro, outside Medellín.
Don’t confuse it with Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH), which is located within the city.
There are several ways to reach Medellín from MDE.
| Transportation | Best for |
|---|---|
| Airport bus | Budget-conscious travelers with manageable luggage |
| Official airport taxi | Direct transportation to your hotel |
| Pre-booked private transfer | Families, groups or travelers who prefer everything arranged in advance |
Airport buses connect MDE with locations including San Diego in Medellín. They’re an economical choice, but you’ll probably need additional transportation to reach your hotel.
Official airport taxis can take you directly to your accommodation. Look for the authorized airport taxi service rather than arranging an informal ride.
Private transfers are worth considering if you’re arriving late, carrying several suitcases or simply don’t want to organize transportation after a long flight.
The journey can be affected by traffic, so leave sufficient time when returning to the airport.
Two of the most popular areas for visitors are Laureles and El Poblado.
Both have restaurants, hotels and access to transportation, but they offer different experiences.
| Area | Best for |
|---|---|
| Laureles | A more residential atmosphere, cafés and access to Metro Line B |
| El Poblado | Hotels, restaurants, shopping and nightlife |
I’ve stayed in Laureles, and one thing I appreciated was how convenient it was to access public transportation.
Laureles has tree-lined streets, restaurants, cafés and residential neighborhoods.
It’s a good area to consider if you want to experience everyday city life rather than stay entirely within a tourist district.
Metro Line B serves the Laureles-Estadio area, with stations including Estadio and Floresta.
However, Laureles covers a fairly large area. Not every hotel is close to a Metro station, so check the actual walking distance before booking.
El Poblado is one of Medellín’s main visitor areas.
You’ll find modern hotels, shopping centers, restaurants, cafés and lively nightlife around places such as Provenza and Parque Lleras.
It’s a convenient choice if you want plenty of dining and entertainment options near your accommodation.
One thing to remember is that El Poblado is hilly.
A hotel may appear close to a Metro station on the map, but the walk can involve a steep climb.
Also, if you prefer quiet evenings, check whether your hotel is located directly beside the busiest nightlife streets.
This hotel is located near Santafé Mall and Oviedo Shopping Center.
According to its Klook listing, Aguacatala Metro station is approximately 800 meters away, around a 13-minute walk.
It’s worth considering if you’d like to stay near shopping and restaurants while having access to the Metro.
The hotel is located away from the busy nightlife of Provenza, which can actually be an advantage. Provenza can get especially lively on weekends, so staying a little farther away may be a better choice if you prefer quieter evenings.
This is a hotel option selected for the site, not somewhere I’ve personally stayed.

Medellín’s Metro system is useful for getting around the city, but not every hotel is within easy walking distance of a station.
Before booking, check your hotel’s location and the actual route to the nearest station.
Also consider what you’ll do most often.
If you’re planning to explore different neighborhoods using public transportation, Laureles may suit you well.
If restaurants, shopping and nightlife are your main priorities, El Poblado may be more convenient.
And if you’re arriving after a long international flight, choosing an easy transfer directly to your hotel can make the start of your trip much more comfortable.
The best location isn’t necessarily the most popular neighborhood. It’s the one that makes your travel plans easier.
