APA Hotel Kyoto Ekihigashi

Location: Kyoto

I’ve stayed at APA Hotel Kyoto Ekihigashi. It’s conveniently located near Kyoto Station, with easy access to buses heading toward Shijo and convenience stores nearby. My room was clean, and king-bed rooms are also available.

One small thing to watch out for: there’s another APA hotel directly opposite, so make sure you go to the correct building.

Mitsui Garden Hotel Nihonbashi Premier

Location: Tokyo

I found the location particularly convenient for getting around Tokyo and shopping. The breakfast buffet was delicious, and the hotel also has an on-site bathing facility. It’s a comfortable option if you want good transportation access while enjoying a few extra hotel amenities.

Rail passes

JR passes for a set number of days. The Japan Rail Pass covers JR lines across Japan. The other three cover one region each, and every pass has its own list of lines and trains, with exceptions and extra charges.

Before you buy, check who can use the pass (your passport and the status you enter Japan with), which lines and trains it covers, whether you need to reserve seats, what costs extra, and how and where you exchange or collect it in Japan. If a pass needs a “Temporary Visitor” stamp in your passport, note that the automated immigration gates don’t add one: use a staffed counter or ask an officer for the stamp. Compare the pass price with the tickets for the trips you plan.

Option Good to know
Japan Rail Pass (Klook) Nationwide JR pass, with exceptions: Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen trains need a separate ticket, and private railways are not covered. For non-Japanese passport holders entering Japan as a “Temporary Visitor”, and some Japanese nationals who live abroad (conditions apply). Klook mails a paper Exchange Order, which you exchange for the pass in Japan within 90 days of purchase. You can book up to 180 days ahead
JR EAST PASS (Klook) JR East lines from Tokyo, including Shinkansen, to the Tohoku, Nagano and Niigata areas. Not valid on the Tokaido Shinkansen. For anyone with a non-Japanese passport, whatever their visa or residence status. Some trains are reserved-seat only, and Green Cars cost extra. You collect the pass at major JR East stations
JR Kansai Wide Area Pass (Klook) 5 days on JR West trains around Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe and Himeji, including Kansai Airport, and on the Sanyo Shinkansen only between Shin-Osaka and Okayama. Not valid on the Tokaido Shinkansen. For non-Japanese passport holders entering Japan as a “Temporary Visitor”. To sit in a reserved seat, book it before you board. You redeem it at JR West machines in Japan
JR Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (Klook) 5 days around Kansai and Hiroshima, including the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima (not beyond Hiroshima), the Haruka and the Miyajima ferry. Not valid on the Tokaido Shinkansen. For non-Japanese passport holders entering Japan as a “Temporary Visitor”. To sit in a reserved seat, book it before you board. The pass includes the JR West Miyajima Ferry, but the ¥100 Miyajima Visitor Tax is payable separately.
