Panama City Hop-on Hop-off Bus: Is It Worth It?

Panama City is spread out. The historic old town, modern waterfront and Panama Canal are all worth visiting, but they’re not conveniently connected by walking routes.

The red City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus offers an easy way to explore several of these places without arranging transportation for every stop.

But is it the best option for your visit?

How does the bus work?

It’s a double-decker sightseeing bus following a fixed route with 16 stops around Panama City.

You can get off at a designated stop, explore the area and catch a later bus to continue your journey.

A complete circuit takes approximately 2.5 hours without sightseeing stops.

The route includes several popular attractions:

Stop Why visit?
Casco Viejo Historic streets, colonial architecture and cafés
Miraflores Locks See the Panama Canal and learn how it operates
Biomuseo A distinctive museum about Panama’s biodiversity
Amador Causeway Waterfront views, restaurants and the marina

One important detail: the bus ticket doesn’t include admission to attractions.

For example, visiting the Miraflores Visitor Center requires a separate entrance ticket.

24 hours or 48 hours?

Ticket Best for
24-hour Seeing the city and visiting one or two main attractions
48-hour Exploring at a relaxed pace over two days

If you only have one day, I would prioritize the places you most want to see rather than trying to visit every stop.

Miraflores Locks can take a substantial part of your day, particularly if you want to explore the visitor center.

With two days, you can divide the attractions more comfortably. For example, visit the Canal on one day and spend more time around Casco Viejo and Amador on the other.

The ticket period starts when your voucher is first validated, but buses only operate during their scheduled daytime hours.

Don’t underestimate the waiting time

This is probably the most important thing to understand before buying the ticket.

Hop-on hop-off doesn’t mean a bus will arrive every few minutes.

The buses follow a timetable, and the number of buses operating can vary.

If you get off at Miraflores or Amador without checking the next departure, you could spend more time waiting than you expected.

The operator’s website links to a real-time bus tracker, which can help you check where the buses are.

Check the timetable and the next available bus before leaving each stop, especially later in the afternoon.

Bus or Uber?

The sightseeing bus is useful when you want to see several attractions along its route and enjoy the city views between them.

Uber or a taxi may be more practical if you’re only visiting one destination or need to travel at a particular time.

There’s no reason you can’t combine both.

For example, you might use the sightseeing bus for the main attractions and take a taxi back to your hotel if the next bus doesn’t fit your plans.

Before you book

The tour is offered through KKday with one-day and two-day ticket options.

You can board at designated stops using your voucher.

The current KKday listing offers free cancellation up to two days before the experience date. Check the conditions for your selected package before paying.

The bus doesn’t include hotel transfers or admission to attractions.

My recommendation: If this is your first visit to Panama City and you want a convenient introduction to several major sights, the hop-on hop-off bus is worth considering.

But if you only want to visit the Panama Canal, arranging a direct ride may be simpler.
